A sand and dust storm originating from the Sahara reached South Europe.

A rare sand and dust storm event that occurred on March 30, 2024, affected Switzerland and southeastern France. The sand and dust storm was caused by dust from the Sahara Desert, which led to a yellowish hue in the sky and a significant impact on air quality in the affected regions. During this event, a large amount of sand dust was blown into Switzerland and southeastern France, resulting in elevated air pollution levels along a corridor stretching from the southwest to the northeast. It is estimated that the amount of dust reached approximately 180,000 tons, double the levels recorded in recent similar events.

The sandstorm not only affected visibility and sunlight but also posed a threat to public health. In France, local authorities announced that the air pollution threshold was breached and advised residents, especially those with heart or respiratory issues, to avoid intense physical exertion.
