On the evening of May 31, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, was hit by an abrupt violent gale and sandstorm. Powerful winds blanketed the city in yellow dust, with towering sand walls dozens of meters high rolling eastward across the urban area and turning daylight into pitch-black dusk in minutes. Blowing sand and isolated sandstorms also swept across central and western Heilongjiang the same day. The incident constituted a compound extreme weather event combining heatwaves, sand and dust, thunderstorms and intense convective activity.

Earlier that afternoon, Harbin (46°N) saw unseasonably high temperatures peak at 35.3°C. Prolonged warm-air heating built up massive atmospheric instability across the region. From 15:00 local time, frigid air associated with a cold vortex advanced rapidly east into Heilongjiang. Sharp frontal collision between cold and warm air triggered a long squall line. Merged synoptic and convective gusts produced maximum instantaneous wind speeds of Force 13 (38.9 m/s) in downtown Harbin, breaking the all-time May record for the city. Around 18:00, visibility slumped to roughly 0.2 km, and PM10 concentrations surged above 1,100 μg/m3, pushing air quality into the severe pollution category.

The sandstorm arose from a combination of locally generated dust and short-range transportation. The tri-border zone covering the Songnen Plain, Inner Mongolia’s Hinggan League and western Jilin lies in an agro-pastoral ecotone. Vegetation had yet to fully leaf out in late spring, and seasonal farming activities further loosened topsoil. Extreme high winds hoisted vast quantities of fine sand to high altitudes via strong updrafts; the airborne dust travelled with the squall line system before descending over Harbin to spawn the sand event. The sandstorm featured three notable traits: sudden onset, localized coverage and short lifespan.
